Peripheral Neuropathies

Peripheral neuropathies are a group of diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system, that is sensory, motor and autonomic nerves. The clinical picture varies generally causing weakness in the lower limbs and the hands, pain, tingling, numbness with a typical stock & glove distribution.

Some neuropathies progress rapidly and worsen in few days (e.g. Guillain-Barré-Strohl Syndrome or Vasculitis). In most of cases, chronic neuropathies may have an immune-mediated inflammatory origin (e.g. Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy, CIDP; polyneuropathies in hematological disorders). Otherwise, the cause may be dysmetabolic, like in vitamin-deficienciesa or in diabetes mellitus.
